General
From 3-17 October 2008, the 3rd GOFC-GOLD symposium was successfully held in Jena, Germany. More than 100 participants from 31 countries attended the meeting. The meeting was a continuation of international meetings of the GOFC-GOLD land cover project office at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2004 and 2006. It comprises seven individual workshops reflecting the various activities of the Land Cover Implementation Team. The agenda overview is shown below. Reports for the different workshops are currently in preparation and will be published as part of the GOFC-GOLD Report Series.

Objectives
The objectives include:
- Present and assess GOFC-GOLD progress in various areas and activities,
- Review the overall GOFC-GOLD strategy and defined future priorities and areas of activity including interactions with political and policy processes,
- Engage the global community of forest and land cover monitoring experts to develop technical consensus in critical areas such as:
- Reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD)
- Boreal forest monitoring
- Development of standards and reporting guidelines
- Assessment and validation of forest and land cover change
- Linking global and regional land mapping and monitoring initiatives
- Formulate action plan for the land cover team and its partners.
